BJP Intensifies Political Outreach to Punjab’s Ravidassia Community Ahead of 2027 Elections

Jalandhar, July 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Jalandhar has signaled a calculated pivot in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral strategy for Punjab. By prioritizing outreach to the Ravidassia community, the party is laying the groundwork for a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
The Spiritual-Political Connection
The visit centered on the inauguration of the Sant Ravidas Express, a new train service linking Amritsar to Varanasi. For the Ravidassia community—a predominantly Dalit group—Varanasi holds deep spiritual significance as the birthplace of Sant Ravidas.
This infrastructure project follows a series of high-profile gestures, including the awarding of a Padma Shri to Sant Niranjan Dass, the head of the influential Dera Sachkhand Ballan, earlier this year. Prime Minister Modi’s direct engagement with the Dera marks a historic departure, as he is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the site, signaling the BJP’s intent to secure a foothold among a community that comprises roughly 32% of Punjab’s population.
Engineering a New Coalition
The BJP’s focus is sharply trained on the Doab region, where the Ravidassia community holds dominant influence in 19 of the 23 assembly constituencies. Since the community formally separated from Sikhism in 2009—following internal disputes over religious practices and identity—they have established a distinct social and religious autonomy, complete with their own symbols and greetings.
The BJP is actively validating this identity to build rapport. Recent moves, such as renaming the Adampur domestic airport to Guru Ravidas Airport, serve as tangible proof of the party’s commitment to the community’s long-standing demands for institutional recognition.
Navigating the Punjab Landscape
The political climate in Punjab remains complex. The BJP faces a strained relationship with the Jat Sikh community in the Malwa region due to lingering tensions over past agricultural policies. Consequently, the party is adopting a strategy of “social engineering.”
By targeting marginalized groups—specifically the Ravidassia and Mazhabi Sikh communities—the BJP is attempting to construct a broad-based coalition that bypasses traditional political power centers.
The Road to 2027
Critics and analysts agree that these maneuvers are not mere administrative visits but essential tactical steps. While other parties rely on traditional support bases, the BJP is attempting to fill a vacuum by addressing the aspirations of communities that have historically felt alienated. As the 2027 elections approach, this deepening alliance with the Ravidassia community is expected to be the cornerstone of the BJP’s attempt to redefine its electoral footprint in the state.
