BDL Secures ₹811 Crore Contract to Supply Anti-Airfield Weapons to IAF

New Delhi, September 2026 — Bolstering India’s domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem, the Ministry of Defence has signed an ₹810.79 crore contract with state-run Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

The deal, signed in late September under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, mandates the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Precision Strikes from Standoff Ranges

The SAT-SAAW is an advanced, air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb explicitly designed to neutralize enemy airfields and ground infrastructure from a safe, long stand-off distance.

Indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this system represents a significant upgrade to the IAF’s strike capabilities. The weapon system is highly versatile and can currently be launched from multiple platforms within the IAF’s existing fleet, including:

  • Jaguar
  • Hawk
  • Su-30 MKI

There are also plans to eventually integrate the glide bomb into the Rafale and Tejas Mk1A fleets.

Pushing the ‘Make in India’ Mandate

This contract is a major victory for the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) defense initiative.

The SAT-SAAW system will feature 60% indigenous content. Furthermore, the program mandates the deeper indigenization of critical sub-systems, such as the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse, and the Twin Store Carrier, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains for highly technical components.

Bottom Line

Deliveries of the 160 SAT-SAAW units are scheduled to take place between FY 2027-2028 and FY 2028-2029. By equipping the IAF with domestically produced, precision-strike glide bombs, this ₹811 crore deal directly enhances India’s operational capability to disrupt enemy infrastructure while significantly deepening the country’s self-reliance in advanced weapons manufacturing.
