Panic and Rumors at Chitkara University
The turmoil first unfolded at Chitkara University in Rajpura, where social media posts fueled panic among hostellers. Rumors spread that two female students were missing, screams had been heard in the campus, and that a tragic extreme step had taken place.
Desperate for answers, hundreds of students gathered inside common areas late at night. As tensions grew, the demonstration turned chaotic, leading to clashes with the police and damage to vehicles.
University management and Patiala Police strongly refuted the claims, stating that no student was missing or dead. Officials clarified that an ambulance seen on campus was merely transporting a student returning from the hospital. Police verification drives yielded no missing reports, roll numbers, or specific complaints from the crowd.
Arson and Escalation at LPU
Within hours, a similar situation flared up at Lovely Professional University (LPU) near Phagwara. Demonstrations escalated into severe violence as protesters vandalized campus buildings, set fire to vehicles, and blocked traffic on National Highway 44 for hours.
The agitation was triggered by claims that a female student had been assaulted by a construction worker on campus premises and subsequently ended her life. LPU officials and the Vice-Chancellor strongly denied the allegations, calling them baseless, fabricated rumors intended to disturb the peace.
Police Registration and Administrative Action
Despite the denials from university authorities, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on statements provided by protesting students. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to conduct a thorough inquiry into both the alleged incidents and the digital trail of the rumors.
