London, July 2026 — Aamir Khan has shattered one of Bollywood’s most enduring myths, firmly denying that his iconic character Phunsukh Wangdu from the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots was based on Ladakhi education reformer Sonam Wangchuk.
While the revelation ends nearly 17 years of speculation, the timing has brought immediate focus back to Wangchuk, who is currently fighting a severe health battle on the streets of New Delhi.
Dismantling the 17-Year Bollywood Myth
For nearly two decades, fans and media alike firmly believed that Khan’s character—popularly known as Rancho—was a direct cinematic adaptation of Wangchuk’s life and innovations.
Speaking at a post-screening Q&A session at the London Indian Film Festival, Khan addressed the rumor directly. “That is a misconception,” Khan stated, clarifying that neither he nor the film’s writers, Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, had any knowledge of Wangchuk or his work when scripting the movie.
“Chatur Was Wrong”: The Viral Spark
The debate was recently reignited by Omi Vaidya, the actor who played Rancho’s cinematic rival, Chatur Ramalingam. Vaidya posted a viral video expressing solidarity with Wangchuk’s current protests, publicly repeating the claim that the character was modeled after the Ladakhi engineer.
Khan gently but directly corrected his former co-star, stating, “Chatur was wrong.”. Khan noted that while Vaidya’s belief was factually incorrect, Wangchuk’s real-world achievements stand entirely on their own merit and do not require validation from a Bollywood movie to be respected.
A Shared Stance on Independence
Interestingly, Wangchuk himself has long maintained a similar stance. The reformer has previously stated that while the film’s creators may have been broadly inspired by his educational initiatives, the character was never a biographical representation. Wangchuk has explicitly noted that he does not want his life’s work overshadowed or validated simply by its association with a commercial film.
Concerns Deepen Over Hunger Strike
Beyond correcting the cinematic history, Khan used the platform to voice urgent concern for Wangchuk’s physical well-being.
Wangchuk is currently on the 20th day of an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, backing youth protests over alleged national exam paper leaks and demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. As the strike enters its third week, worries are mounting over his rapidly deteriorating health. “All of us are very concerned for his health and his life… we hope that he ends his fast,” Khan said.
