Uttar Pradesh, a key state in India’s push towards urban modernization, has recently accelerated its sustainable urban development initiatives, aligning with its vision to transform into a trillion-dollar economy. The state government, in collaboration with various national and international bodies, has been introducing a series of ambitious projects aimed at improving urban mobility, enhancing air quality, and promoting economic development through smart city endeavors.
One of the flagship projects, “Meri Bus, Meri Sadak,” launched with the intent to drastically improve urban transportation, is set to overhaul the public transport system by introducing over 12,000 buses to cater to six million daily riders by 2031. This initiative is not only expected to ease daily commutes but also reduce environmental pollution significantly. The introduction of electric buses under this program is projected to cut costs by 23-32% compared to traditional CNG buses, making a strong case for sustainable transit solutions.
Furthering the state’s commitment to sustainable practices, the Smart Cities Mission in Uttar Pradesh is fostering the development of high-tech urban centers. Cities like Lucknow are at the forefront, with the Lucknow Smart City Ltd leading efforts to enhance liveability and infrastructure, which are crucial for attracting investment and boosting economic activities.
Legal frameworks have also been strengthened to support these developments. The Urban Planning and Development Act of 1973, for example, facilitates the levy of betterment and city development charges on property owners who benefit from infrastructure improvements, ensuring that the financial burden of urban development is shared.
As Uttar Pradesh continues to urbanize at a rapid pace, these initiatives are vital for managing the challenges of urban sprawl, traffic congestion, and pollution. With a clear roadmap and collaboration between government bodies and the private sector, Uttar Pradesh is poised to set a benchmark in sustainable urban development in India.
