Unakoti Rock Carvings Campaign Aims for UNESCO World Heritage Tag
Preserving History: Tripura’s Ancient Marvel Seeks Global Recognition
A Step Toward Global Recognition
The magnificent Unakoti rock carvings in Tripura are poised to make history as the state intensifies efforts to secure a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for this ancient archaeological wonder. Known as the “Angkor Wat of the Northeast,” Unakoti is a treasure trove of intricate rock sculptures and murals, attracting both scholars and tourists for its cultural and historical significance.
The campaign, led by the Tripura government and supported by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), aims to spotlight Unakoti’s unique blend of art, history, and spiritual heritage on the global stage.
A Historical Marvel
Unakoti, which translates to “one less than a crore,” boasts an extraordinary collection of rock carvings dating back to the 7th to 9th centuries. The site is home to colossal bas-relief sculptures of Hindu deities, including a 30-foot-tall sculpture of Lord Shiva, locally known as “Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava.”
According to the Tripura Tourism Department, the carvings reflect a blend of tribal and Hindu artistic traditions, making Unakoti a rare cultural gem.
The Path to UNESCO Recognition
Collaborative Efforts
The Tripura government, in partnership with ASI, has initiated extensive documentation, restoration, and preservation activities to meet UNESCO’s stringent criteria for World Heritage Site designation.
Infrastructure Development
New amenities, including eco-friendly pathways, interpretive centers, and improved accessibility, are being added to enhance visitor experiences while ensuring minimal ecological disruption.
Cultural Festivals
To raise awareness, the state organizes annual festivals like Ashokastami Mela, which celebrates the cultural and spiritual significance of Unakoti, drawing thousands of visitors from across India and abroad.
Boost to Tourism and Economy
Securing a UNESCO World Heritage tag could transform Tripura’s tourism landscape. According to the state’s tourism department, the site already attracts over 50,000 visitors annually. A UNESCO designation could potentially triple this number, generating significant revenue and creating new opportunities for local communities.
National and Global Attention
The Ministry of Culture has expressed full support for the campaign, with experts highlighting Unakoti’s exceptional value as a cultural and artistic heritage site. If successful, it will join India’s illustrious list of 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Preserving the Legacy
The Unakoti campaign reflects Tripura’s dedication to preserving its rich history while paving the way for sustainable tourism. As the state awaits UNESCO’s verdict, it continues to position itself as a steward of India’s unparalleled cultural heritage.
